How it works

How do you translate an Estonian recording into English?

To translate Estonian audio to English, drop the recording on this page. It is transcribed as Estonian in short pieces, then the lines are translated into English in batches, each keeping its time. Read the English transcript, and switch to Original whenever you need the Estonian wording.

  1. 1

    Drop in the Estonian recording

An interview, a lecture from Tartu, a call, a voice message: MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG and more.

  2. 2

    Estonian, then English

Transcribed in Estonian, then translated. Up to 30 minutes of each recording.

  3. 3

    Read or save the English

Copy it, or save text or Word; the Estonian transcript saves the same way.

How well is spoken Estonian understood?

Well. In our test, Estonian speech was transcribed with slips mostly in names and rare words, and its English translation was rated good. A name misheard in the transcript stays misheard: “Rahul Travid”, the cricketer Rahul Dravid, came through as “Rahul Travid”.

Foreign place names can come out better than they went in: the transcript wrote “Čisinau”, Estonian-style, and the English gave “The capital of Moldova is Chișinău.”

Why does the English say “he” when the Estonian said “ta”?

Because Estonian “ta” means he, she or it, and English has to pick one. In our test a storm’s “ta liigub” became “he is moving”. When the recording is about a woman or a thing, check every “he” against what the speaker meant.

What happens to Estonian case endings on names?

They are usually taken off, but a short name can be misread with its ending. “Fredi tuulekiiruseks”, the wind speed of the storm Fred, came back as “Freddie’s wind speed”. Names of people and places are the lines worth checking against the Estonian transcript.

Fredi tuulekiiruseks on praegu 105 miili tunnis (165 km/h)…
EnglishFreddie’s wind speed is currently 105 miles per hour (165 km/h)…
Moldova pealin on Čisinau.
EnglishThe capital of Moldova is Chișinău.
Täpselt kell 8.46 hommikul…
EnglishExactly at 8:46 a.m.…

How are Estonian times and figures written in English?

In English style. “Kell 8.46 hommikul”, 8.46 in the morning, became “8:46 a.m.”, the full stop now a colon, and “105 miili tunnis (165 km/h)” became “105 miles per hour (165 km/h)”. The numbers themselves came through unchanged.

FAQ

Estonian audio into English: questions

Is the Estonian to English audio translator free?

Yes. 3 recordings a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account. Both transcripts and all the downloads are included.

Can I translate an Estonian voice message?

Yes. Save it from WhatsApp, Telegram or Messenger as a file, often OPUS, OGG or M4A, and drop it on this page. The English comes back line by line with times.

Can I save the English as Word?

Yes. The Word file is headed with the recording’s name, its length and “Translated: Estonian → English”, then the English paragraphs, with times or without.

What if the speakers switch to Russian or English?

This page transcribes all of it as Estonian. For a recording that mixes languages, use the main audio translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.

Does the English say who is speaking?

No. The web transcript has words and times only. NoteOwl on a Mac labels each speaker in Estonian and English recordings it transcribes.

Is my recording uploaded?

The file stays on your device. Short pieces of its sound go to a cloud AI transcription service, then the Estonian text to a cloud AI translation service; both discard it, and NoteOwl stores nothing.
