How it works

How do you translate a Finnish recording into English?

To translate Finnish audio to English, upload the recording; this page expects Finnish speech and writes English. The Finnish is transcribed in short pieces, translated in batches of lines, and every line keeps the time it was spoken. Read the English, then save it.

  1. 1

    Upload the Finnish audio

    A palaveri, a luento, a puheviesti from a relative: MP3, M4A, WAV or OGG.

  2. 2

    Finnish text, then English

Transcribed as Finnish, then translated. Each recording up to 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Copy or download

English as text or Word; Original holds the Finnish transcript with the same times.

How well does Finnish speech come through in English?

Well. Finnish speech was transcribed cleanly in our test, and the full recording, translated into English, came out good. Case endings that Finnish adds to names come off as they should: “Raonicille Brisbanen tennisturnauksessa” became “to Raonic at the Brisbane tennis tournament”.

Why might the English say “he” about a woman?

Because Finnish hän means both he and she, and English must pick one. In our test, a passage about Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, which never named her gender, came back as “Kirchner announced his intention…”. When it matters, check who is being talked about.

The lines around a sentence often settle it, which is one reason the transcript is translated in batches rather than one line at a time. A name alone, as here, may not.

Which words should you check in the English?

Specialist terms and unusual names. “Osakilpailu”, a race in a series, came back as “semi‑final”, so check sports and technical vocabulary. The town of Sintra was heard as “Sindran” and became “Sindri”: a misheard name is translated as it was heard.

What happens to Finnish numbers and dates?

The English way. “Kolmetoista osavaltiota” became “thirteen states”, and “400 jKr.”, read aloud as “jälkeen Kristuksen”, became “400 AD”. A clock time such as “kello 08:46” stayed on the 24-hour clock as “08:46”.

FAQ

Questions about translating Finnish audio into English

Is the Finnish to English audio translator free?

Yes. 3 recordings a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account. The English, the Finnish transcript and every download come with it.

Can I translate a Finnish voice message?

Yes. Save it from the chat app as an audio file, usually OPUS, OGG or M4A, and upload it. The English and the Finnish come back with times.

Does it understand spoken, everyday Finnish?

Yes, it is transcribed too. Everyday puhekieli differs from written Finnish, so for very colloquial speech, check the lines that matter against the recording.

What if the speakers switch to English or Swedish?

This page transcribes everything as Finnish. For a recording that mixes languages, use the main audio translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.

Are the speakers named in the English?

No. The English transcript has the words and the times only. NoteOwl on a Mac labels each speaker in its transcripts.

Is my recording uploaded or kept?

The file stays on your device. Short pieces of its sound go to a cloud AI transcription service and the Finnish text to a cloud AI translation service, which each discard it. NoteOwl stores no audio and no text.
