How it works

How do you put English subtitles on a Finnish video?

To translate a Finnish video to English, drop it on this page. The browser extracts the sound, the Finnish is transcribed and put into English, and each English subtitle is timed to the Finnish speech. Download the SRT and add it wherever the video plays.

  1. 1

    Drop in the Finnish video

A course, a talk, a product video or a family recording, as MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM.

  2. 2

    English subtitles are timed

Transcription, translation and timing in one go, for videos up to 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Download the files

English SRT or VTT, and Finnish subtitles from Original if you want them.

How well does Finnish speech turn into English subtitles?

Well: Finnish speech was transcribed cleanly in our test, and the whole recording translated into English came out good. The translation even repaired some transcript slips, writing “Singapore’s” where the transcript had “Singapuren”, and “Machu Picchu” where it had “machu picchiusta”.

Why do long Finnish words become several English words?

Because Finnish builds one word where English uses a phrase: “maailmanperintökohteeksi” came back as “a UNESCO World Heritage site”. Overall the two ran about the same length in our test, and the English is laid out in its own subtitles of up to 2 lines and 42 characters.

Each English subtitle starts when its Finnish words are spoken and stays long enough to read at 17 characters a second. The English and Finnish sets are cut separately, so they needn’t pair up one for one.

What should you check before you publish?

Names, and any ordinary word the transcript took for a name. In our test, “tikapuut” (scaffolding) was heard as “TikaPoot” and stayed “TikaPoot” in the English, and Danielle Lantagne became “Daniele”. Familiar names such as Rolando Mendoza came through correctly.

Can you publish Finnish and English subtitles together?

Yes. The same run gives Finnish subtitles under Original, timed to the same speech. Upload both to YouTube or your player, so Finnish viewers and English viewers each switch on their own language.

Making Finnish videos with more than one speaker?

NoteOwl understands Finnish on your Mac: it imports MP4 videos, transcribes them with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles naming each speaker. For Finnish subtitles of Finnish speech, use the Finnish subtitle generator.

FAQ

Questions about English subtitles for Finnish videos

Is the Finnish to English video translator free?

Yes. 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account and no watermark. English and Finnish subtitles both download.

Will it dub the Finnish into English?

No. You get English subtitles to show over the video; the Finnish soundtrack and the file are left as they are.

How do I add English subtitles on YouTube?

In YouTube Studio, open Subtitles, choose the video, add English and upload the SRT with timing. Viewers can then turn English on in the player.

What if the video also has Swedish or English speech?

This page transcribes all the speech as Finnish. For a video that mixes languages, use the main video translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.

Is my video sent to a server?

Only the sound, in short pieces, to a cloud AI transcription service, and then the Finnish text to a cloud AI translation service; each discards what it receives. The picture stays on your device, and NoteOwl stores nothing.

Do the subtitles name the speakers?

No, the English subtitles carry only the words. NoteOwl on a Mac writes each speaker’s name into the SRT files it saves.
