How it works
How do you translate a Norwegian recording into English?
To translate Norwegian audio to English, add the file here; the page listens for Norwegian and writes English. The speech is transcribed in short pieces, the lines are translated in batches, and each keeps the time it was spoken. Read the English, then save it.
- 1
Add the Norwegian recording
A møte, a forelesning, a talemelding from family: MP3, M4A, WAV or OGG.
- 2
Norwegian, then English
Transcribed as Norwegian and translated into English. Recordings up to 30 minutes.
- 3
Save what you need
English as text or Word; switch to Original for the Norwegian transcript with the same times.
How good is the English from Norwegian speech?
Strong in our test: a whole Norwegian recording, transcribed and translated, came out among the better results we measured. The transcription is good, and its slips are mostly in names and rare words, which then reach the English as heard.
Norwegians speak many dialects in daily life, so for a recording in strong dialect, check the lines that matter against the sound.
Why did a storm called Fred become “Peace”?
Because “fred” is also the Norwegian word for peace. In our test, “Fred beveger seg nå mot nordvest” came back as “Peace is now moving northwest”. Names that are also ordinary words are the likeliest slips, so look out for them.
Which names come out wrong?
Mostly foreign ones, spelled the way they sound. In our test the Haitian president Martelly appeared as “Martelli”, a Canadian politician named Layton as “Leighton”, and the ASUS Eee PC laptop as “Asus iPC”. Search the English for every proper name before you file it.
What happens to Norwegian abbreviations and measurements?
Spoken out, then translated. “400 e.Kr.” was read as “400 år etter Kristus” and came out as “400 AD”, which is right. Fractions are harder: “29¾ by 24½ inches” came back as “29 three‑quarter inches by 24 single inches”, so check measurements by ear.

FAQ
Questions about translating Norwegian audio into English
Is the Norwegian to English audio translator free?
Yes. Translate 3 recordings a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account. The English, the Norwegian transcript and every download are included.
Can I translate a Norwegian voice message?
Yes. Save the message from your chat app as an audio file, often OPUS, OGG or M4A, and add it to the page. The English and the Norwegian come back with times.
Is the Norwegian transcript in Bokmål?
In our test it was, since the speech was read from Bokmål texts. Switch to Original to read the Norwegian and save it as text or SRT.
What if the recording switches to English?
This page transcribes everything as Norwegian. For a conversation that mixes Norwegian and English, use the main audio translator with the spoken language on Detect automatically.
Does the English name the speakers?
No. The English transcript has the words and times only. NoteOwl on a Mac labels each speaker in its own transcripts.
Does my recording leave my computer?
Only as short pieces of sound, sent to a cloud AI transcription service, followed by the Norwegian text sent to a cloud AI translation service. Both discard what they receive, and NoteOwl stores nothing.
