How it works

How do you put English subtitles on a Czech video?

To translate a Czech video to English, drop the file here. The browser separates the sound, the Czech is transcribed and translated, and the English is laid out as subtitles that start with the Czech words. Download the English SRT and play it with the video, or upload it.

  1. 1

    Add the Czech video

MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM, from a phone, a course or a download.

  2. 2

    Czech speech, English text

Transcribed in Czech, translated, timed. Up to 30 minutes of each video.

  3. 3

    Save the English subtitles

SRT or VTT; Original holds Czech subtitles on the same timing.

How close do the English subtitles come to a human translation?

Close. One Czech test sentence came back word for word as a human translator had written it: “The Brazilian suffered a serious head injury after a crash during the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.” Whole Czech recordings translated into English rated good in our test.

Brazilec utrpěl vážné poranění hlavy po havárii během Velké ceny Maďarska v roce 2009.
EnglishThe Brazilian suffered a serious head injury after a crash during the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.
Ryby často hynou z důvodu vysokého obsahu toxinů ve vodě.

Patnáct kamenných úlomků se přisuzuje meteorickému roji z července předchozího roku.
EnglishFifteen stone fragments are attributed to a meteor shower from July of the previous year.

How do Czech times read in English subtitles?

As English times. “v 8:46 hodin dopoledne”, at 8:46 in the morning, came back as “at 8:46 a.m.”. Place names spelled the English way in the Czech stay that way: “Six Flags St. Louis v Missouri” became “Six Flags St. Louis in Missouri”.

How do the English subtitles sit on screen?

In short, readable blocks: at most 2 lines of up to 42 characters, each subtitle up for 1 to 7 seconds and paced at 17 characters a second. Each starts when the matching Czech words are spoken.

The English is cut into subtitles after translation, so it follows English sentence order even where the Czech put the verb or the subject last.

What should you check before sharing the subtitles?

Names and rare words. Czech speech was transcribed well in our test, but the slips there were mostly in names and unusual terms, and a slip in the Czech transcript is carried into the English. Switch to Original to compare a doubtful subtitle with the Czech.

FAQ

Questions about English subtitles for Czech videos

Is the Czech to English video translator free?

Yes. 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account and nothing added to the video. English and Czech subtitles are both yours to download.

Can I watch a Czech video with the English subtitles?

Yes. Keep the English SRT beside the video file and choose it in your player’s subtitle menu; VLC and most other players open SRT files.

Does it work for Slovak videos?

This page listens for Czech. For a video in Slovak, use the Slovak to English page so the speech is transcribed as Slovak.

Is text shown in the video translated?

No. Only the speech is transcribed; the picture is never read, so Czech titles and captions on screen stay as they are.

Does it add an English voice?

No. It makes English subtitles and leaves the video and its Czech sound untouched.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The browser takes the sound out on your device; short pieces of it go to a cloud AI transcription service and the Czech text to a cloud AI translation service, both of which discard it. The picture never leaves your device.
