Will Indonesian subtitles fit on screen?
Yes. Indonesian ran about a tenth longer than English in our test, and the subtitles are laid out after translating: up to 2 lines of about 42 characters, on screen for 1 to 7 seconds and long enough to read at 17 characters a second.
Because the Indonesian is cut into subtitles on its own terms, it can take a few more subtitles than the English version of the same speech. Long affixed words such as mengirimkan or perjalanan are never split across lines.
How do numbers and times appear in Indonesian subtitles?
As Indonesians write them. In our test, “6.5 percent to $1,250” became “6,5 persen menjadi $1.250” and 3:30 p.m. became “pukul 15.30”: a decimal comma, a dot between thousands and a full stop inside the 24-hour time.

How will the subtitles address Indonesian viewers?
Politely, with Anda, and with Pak for “sir”: “Please sit down, sir” became “Silakan duduk, Pak.” and “Thank you all for coming today” became “Terima kasih semuanya sudah datang hari ini.” For a channel that talks to viewers as friends, change Anda to kamu before uploading.
