How it works

How do you turn a Thai video’s speech into English subtitles?

To translate a Thai video to English, drop it on this page. Your browser lifts out the soundtrack, the Thai is written down in Thai script, and each line becomes English text placed inside the seconds it was said. What you save is an English SRT or VTT.

  1. 1

    Pick the Thai video

A cooking clip, a temple tour, a class or a talk from a Thai channel: MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM all work.

  2. 2

    Wait a moment

The first 30 minutes of the video are covered in one run.

  3. 3

    Keep the .en.srt

Or VTT; the Original switch gives the Thai subtitles with the same timing.

Why do the English subtitles hold more characters than the Thai?

Thai says the same in slightly fewer characters than English. Each English line can take 42 characters, and a subtitle stays up until it can be read at 17 a second. The subtitles are cut from the English text itself, so their number can differ from the Thai.

Thai writing has no full stops and no spaces between words, but the English subtitles get normal English punctuation and are cut at English sentence ends and pauses.

How well does Thai speech come through in English subtitles?

Its meaning survives, even though, across whole test recordings, Thai turned into English scored below most languages. Plain statements were often exact: “The surface of the Moon consists of rock and dust”. Names heard by sound are the usual slip, so check them against the Thai subtitle.

What happens to English words said inside Thai?

They usually come straight through. The Thai transcript writes many of them in Latin letters, so band names, acronyms and terms reach the English unchanged: “Aerosmith cancelled the remainder of its tour”, “the pH value of chemicals”. Thai-script spellings of English words go back by sound.

How are Thai units and abbreviations shown in English?

In their English forms. A wind speed given as “105 ไมล์ต่อชั่วโมง (165 กม./ชม.)” came back as “105 miles per hour (165 km/h)”, and the Thai “พายุเฟรด”, the storm Fred, became “Storm Fred”, with the word for storm kept in the name.

ขณะนี้พายุเฟรดมีความเร็วลมอยู่ที่ 105 ไมล์ต่อชั่วโมง (165 กม./ชม.)…
EnglishCurrently, Storm Fred has wind speeds of 105 miles per hour (165 km/h)…
บ่อยครั้งที่ปลาเสียชีวิตเพราะในน้ำมีสารพิษที่มีความเข้มข้นสูง
EnglishFrequently, fish die because the water contains high concentrations of toxins.

Can you publish the Thai subtitles as well?

Yes. Original gives Thai subtitles in lines of up to 35 characters, broken where Thai words begin and end and timed to the same speech. Viewers can choose either track, and you can compare any English subtitle with the Thai one at that moment.

FAQ

English subtitles for Thai videos: questions

Is the Thai to English video translator free?

Free, yes: 3 videos daily of up to 30 minutes, without signing in, and the picture is never stamped.

How do I watch a Thai video with the English subtitles?

Put the .en.srt beside the video with a matching file name, or add it through the player’s subtitle option.

Does the English show the speaker’s politeness?

Not directly. Thai ends polite sentences with ครับ or ค่ะ, and English has nothing like them, so a courteous line and a casual one can read alike.

Will it dub the video in English?

No. The page writes English subtitles and leaves the video as it was.

Do the subtitles name the speakers?

No, only the words appear. NoteOwl on a Mac writes each speaker’s name into the SRT files it saves.

Is the video uploaded?

Nothing but sound goes out: short clips of it for transcription, then the Thai lines for translation, each to a cloud AI service that discards them after replying. Your video file stays with you.
