How it works

How do you subtitle a Slovak video in English?

To translate a Slovak video to English, drop it on this page. The sound is taken out in your browser, the Slovak speech is transcribed and translated, and the English becomes subtitles timed to the speaker. Download the English SRT and play or upload it with the video.

  1. 1

    Drop the Slovak video

MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM, from a phone, a camera or a download.

  2. 2

    Slovak becomes English

Transcribed in Slovak, translated, then timed. Up to 30 minutes of each video.

  3. 3

    Download the subtitles

English SRT or VTT; Original has Slovak subtitles with the same timing.

How are the English subtitles timed?

To the Slovak speaker. Each subtitle begins with the Slovak words it translates and stays up long enough to read, 1 to 7 seconds, in at most 2 lines of 42 characters. Because the English is cut after translating, it follows English sentences rather than Slovak ones.

That matters because Slovak word order is free: “padlo na mesto ticho”, literally “fell on the city silence”, came back as “silence fell over the city”, in the order an English reader expects.

How good are English subtitles from Slovak speech?

Good. Slovak was transcribed well in our test, and whole Slovak recordings translated into English rated good. Plain sentences come back as plain English subtitles, as these two test lines show.

Ryby často hynú v dôsledku vysokej koncentrácie toxických látok vo vodách.
EnglishFish often die due to high concentrations of toxic substances in the water.
Brazílčan utrpel vážne zranenie hlavy pri nehode počas Veľkej ceny Maďarska 2009.
EnglishThe Brazilian suffered a serious head injury in an accident during the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix.

What happens to Slovak times, units and directions?

They are put into English. “o 8:46 ráno”, at 8:46 in the morning, became “at 8:46 a.m.”; “105 míľ za hodinu (165 km/h)” became “105 miles per hour (165 km/h)”; and “na severozápad” became “northwest”. The values themselves are not changed.

What should you check before sharing the subtitles?

Names and unusual words. Slovak transcription slipped mostly on those in our test, and a slip there is carried into the English. Switch the result to Original to see the Slovak subtitle at the same moment, and fix the English line in the SRT if needed.

FAQ

Questions about English subtitles for Slovak videos

Is the Slovak to English video translator free?

Yes. 3 videos a day, each up to 30 minutes, with no account. Both the English and the Slovak subtitle files can be downloaded.

Can I watch the video with the English subtitles?

Yes. Open the video in a player that reads SRT files, such as VLC, and add the English SRT from its subtitle menu.

Does it work if the speaker is Czech?

This page listens for Slovak. For a Czech video, use the Czech to English page so the speech is transcribed as Czech.

Is Slovak text on screen translated?

No. The picture is never read; only the spoken Slovak is transcribed and translated.

Does it replace the Slovak voices with English?

No. It produces English subtitles and leaves the video and its sound as they were.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Your browser extracts the sound on your device and sends short pieces of it to a cloud AI transcription service, then the Slovak text to a cloud AI translation service; both discard it. The picture is never sent.
