How it works

How do you get English subtitles for a Greek video?

To translate a Greek video to English, drop the file on this page. The sound is transcribed in Greek, each line becomes English, and the English is cut into subtitles on the Greek timing. Download the English SRT and load it with the video.

  1. 1

    Drop the Greek video in

MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM. The picture never leaves your computer.

  2. 2

    English subtitles are built

Greek speech is transcribed, translated and timed. Up to 30 minutes per video.

  3. 3

    Download SRT or VTT

The Greek subtitles are under Original, timed the same way.

Can you follow a Greek video in English with these subtitles?

Yes. Load the English SRT in your video player, or give it the video’s file name so the player finds it on its own. For a video you publish, upload the SRT with it so English-speaking viewers can switch the subtitles on.

Each English subtitle is laid out fresh, at most 2 lines of about 42 characters, so it follows English sentences rather than the Greek ones.

How well is spoken Greek turned into English?

Well. In our test, Greek speech was transcribed cleanly and the English made from it rated good. Clear voices give the best subtitles; heavy music or crosstalk leaves gaps, and anything misheard is translated as heard.

What happens to Greek times and units in English subtitles?

They switch to English forms. π.μ. became a.m., the Greek “χλμ / ώρα” became km/h, and a storm’s Greek name came back with its usual English spelling. Some phrases come through a little literally: a meteor shower appeared as “meteor rain”.

Στις 8:46 π.μ. ακριβώς…
EnglishAt exactly 8:46 a.m.…
Ο τυφώνας Φρεντ … (165 χλμ / ώρα)
EnglishHurricane Fred … (165 km/h)
…της βροχής μετεωριτών…
English…meteor rain…

Should you check names in the English subtitles?

Yes, more than anything else. Greek writes foreign names and brands in Greek letters, and on the way back to English they are spelled by sound, sometimes into a different word. Read through the names before you publish the subtitles.

Can you keep the Greek subtitles as well?

Yes. Switch to Original for Greek subtitles of the same speech, laid out by the same rules, such as “σχηματίστηκε σήμερα στον Ατλαντικό Ωκεανό.” on one line. Publishing both helps learners of Greek and lets Greek viewers read along.

Working with Greek videos regularly?

NoteOwl understands Greek on your Mac: it imports MP4 videos, transcribes them with unlimited transcription and saves SRT subtitles with each speaker’s name. For Greek subtitles only, use the Greek subtitle generator.

If the Greek video already has subtitles, the subtitle translator can put that file into English with its timing untouched.
